Statement from the Chairman

The Folkestone & Hythe Orchestral Society is an amateur orchestra, consisting of members of all age groups, who are highly motivated and who enjoy making music together. The orchestra performs under the name of 'Folkestone Symphony'

We are a registered charity and our constitution states that our aim is “to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in the appreciation of the art and science of music in all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts and recitals and by such other ways as the Society through its Committee shall determine from time to time.”

Despite that rather grand statement the orchestra is a friendly group of people who meet up to rehearse once a week, giving at least four public concerts a year to very appreciative audiences.

Drawing from a catchment area that reaches from Deal through to Ashford & the Weald, we have about 50 playing members. We are supported by the Orchestra's Friends & Patrons, our Vice-Presidents and our President: Mrs Celia Blakey. Much of our continuing success is due to the energy and enthusiasm of our members and the expertise of our conductor and leader, who are both very fine musicians.

The orchestra meets at the Folkestone School for Girls in Coolinge Lane, Folkestone on Monday evenings during school terms, from 7.30 to 9.30pm.

We are affiliated to Making Music, the UK's number one organisation for voluntary music, supporting almost 3,000 amateur music groups and individuals.

We shall be very pleased to see you at one of our concerts in the hope that you will want to come again ....
